According to the study, a staggering 96% of organizations are either already embedded in or are planning to initiate a zero-trust security model within the next 18 months. This statistic is indicative of a monumental shift, considering that only a quarter of these organizations were on this path in 2021. Interestingly, there is a discernible pattern of larger organizations (5000-9999 employees) out-pacing their smaller counterparts (500-999 employees) in the adoption of this security measure.
North America is at the fore-front, with 73% of organizations having a defined zero-trust strategy, while adoption in Japan and Australia lags at 47%. The financial services sector has a slight edge over the software industry in adoption, marked at 71% compared to 69%, under-scoring the pervasive nature of this security paradigm across varied industrial domains.
Intriguingly, despite economic challenges, investments in zero-trust security are surging. The study reveals that 80% of organizations have increased their zero-trust security budgets over the past year. A deeper dive indicates that while 60% reported a modest increase, 20% experienced a budget surge of over 25%, under-scoring the strategic importance attached to zero-trust security.
The consensus around the centrality of identity in the zero-trust model is growing. An overwhelming 91% of respondents acknowledge the critical role of identity, a significant leap from 71% the previous year. This evolution in perspective is attributed to an enhanced understanding that robust IAM is quintessential in safeguarding organizational assets in a complex, hybrid-cloud world.
However, the persistent reliance on passwords remains a significant concern. The study found that 55% of organizations still deploy passwords for verifying both internal and external users. Only a mere 19% have transitioned to more secure, high-assurance methods like biometrics for authentication. The lingering dependence on passwords underscores a critical vulnerability, necessitating a more accelerated transition to advanced authentication mechanisms.
